The United Steelworkers Union said today that it would give a 24 hour extension to U.S. refinery workers’ labor contracts. The move will delay a strike that would stop half of the United States refineries.
The contracts run up at midnight Sunday morning and the workers could have walked out then, but now the strike will at least be delayed.
I think that these workers deserve more pay, particularly after seeing Exxon’s record breaking profits for 2008. At the same time, jobs are getting really hard to come by, especially jobs secured by contracts.
I would really like to see the negotiations finish as quickly as possible so that the OPEC oil cuts won’t hurt our wallets as badly as if half of our oil refinery production was cut.
